In 1937 Otto Bayer, a German Chemist was credited with the invention of polyurethane.  He discovered that mixing small volumes of chemical substances can create a dry foam material. 

In the 1940s it became more popular and was used by the US Military in airplanes.  In 1979 polyurethane began being used as a building insulation. Spray polyurethane has since been improved upon and comes in a range of densities and cell structure.
